Health Supplements for Woman: How To Choose The Right Supplements

Filed Under (Health Supplements) by Greg on 25-05-2009

If we took a proper well balanced diet which contained all the nutrition then we would never be deficient of any vitamins, minerals, and anti-oxidants. We would get them from our food resources and would never have to complain.

Unfortunately diets are imperfect and women are not as healthy as they could be. That’s the reason why doctors recommend multivitamin supplements as fundamental to overall health and wellness. If everything was perfect we would all eat a balanced diet consisting of at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day, whole grains, low-fat dairy and high quality, lean meat, poultry, or fish.

Ideally we should eat fresh from the farm, preferably organic foods that are rich in nutrients, coming from soil not contaminated by harmful pesticides and toxins. Fresh foods should not be further depleted by preservatives and long-transit times.

The question is how women should choose the right kinds of health products for optimum wellness from the wide variety of vitamin products and supplements available today.

Of course we all know that vitamins, minerals, herbals and other health supplements are not a substitute for any medication and the doctor’s guidance. They can still be very helpful in certain health issues.

One of the simplest things you can do today is taking top quality supplements each day. But you should be careful not to overdo it for the simple reason that there are possible risks associated with taking higher than recommended doses of some vitamins, minerals and herbal supplements. The best thing is read and follow label directions.

Women should go for a multivitamin that is specially formulated to support their specific nutritional needs. Choose a multivitamin that is highly absorbent nutritional supplement specially formulated to offer a potent and effective alternative to traditional mass manufactured multivitamins.

Look for these things in a Multivitamin:

High Nutritional Value-Look for a multivitamin with good nutrition content because that will good health. There are formulated multivitamins that fill our nutritional gaps using the most nutritionally dense and beneficial foods.

Ultra Potent-The multivitamin should use only high quality naturally occurring vitamins and minerals that are absorbed easily by the body. For example Super Green Foods like Spirulina, Chlorella and Green Barley.

Easy Absorption-They should be easily absorbed by the body. For instance natural enzymes like Bromelain and Papain aid absorption.

Natural-Ensure the multivitamins contain nothing else but only the highest quality natural ingredients. No unnecessary additives, fillers, colors, or dyes. It should also be free of food allergens like wheat, dairy, corn, soy etc.

Safe-Last but not the least, the products should be safe.

While selecting vitamins check for a balanced daily formula, especially one that is blended so that all the ingredients work together in harmony. It would also be beneficial to include a a protein shake and a fish oil capsule in your daily diet.

However if you are you expecting a baby or lactating, use caution when taking any kind of womens health supplements. It is always better to consult your physician first. He might probably prescribe a prenatal vitamin that is specially formulated for pregnancy.

Similarly if you are going through any medication it is good to talk to your doctor before you try any women’s health supplements. Your doctor may not want you taking both at once. So go ahead and choose good multivitamins to maintain your body´s overall health.

The Missing Ingredient

Filed Under (Health Supplements) by Greg on 19-05-2009

If you take antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals you’re only getting it half-right.  A new class of nutrients is just as important – maybe MORE important.

In five or ten years most people will be taking these nutrients right along with vitamins and minerals.  Yet few are taking them now.

These nutrients do not exist in most of the foods sold in health food stores, whether organic or not.  Almost any cooking or processing destroys these highly complex molecules.

What’s more, all the antioxidants and other supplements you take are half as effective – or worse – if you don’t get THIS nutrient either in your food or in supplement form.

And I can almost guarantee you are not getting it

Menopause and Progesterone

Filed Under (Health Supplements) by Greg on 14-01-2009

Recent research tells us that women do suffer from decreased levels of progesterone and also experience other symptoms such as unexplained weight gain (particularly in the stomach area), depression, fatigue, hair loss, memory loss, mood swings, migraines and loss of libido. A natural cream can balance estrogens without side effects.

Progesterone and estrogen are the two main hormones made by women’s ovaries when they are menstruating. Smaller amounts of these hormones are also secreted by the adrenal glands. It’s necessary for the survival of the fertilized ovum, its embryo as well as the fetus during gestation.

Progesterone’s primary functions include: acting as a precursor to estrogen and testosterone; it maintains uterine lining and aids in gestation; protects against fibrocystic breasts, endometrial and breast cancer; acts as a natural diuretic, helps use fat for energy; can be a natural antidepressant; aids thyroid hormone action; normalizes blood clotting; restores sex drive; normalizes blood sugar, zinc and copper levels; restores proper cell oxygen levels, has a thermogenic effect; builds bone and helps to protects against osteoporosis.
Some doctors feel that menopausal symptoms, osteoporosis and heart disease may not be due to a deficiency of estrogen, but to a relative estrogen excess due to progesterone deficiency.
Synthetic progestins, such as an HRT drug called Provera (a synthetic chemical), do not have the same biological effects as natural progesterone and have been known to cause side effects including: fluid retention, depression, breast tenderness, stroke, jaundice, blood clotting and cervical erosions.

On the other hand, natural progesterone has no known side effects and has been found to be helpful in alleviating symptoms such as PMS and hot flashes. It has also been credited with helping to prevent osteoporosis.

Many doctors now prescribe for women in menopause the use of a low-dose, natural progesterone cream during the last two weeks of the menstrual cycle. The cream is easily absorbed into thin-skin areas such as the breasts, inner arms, neck or belly by the subcutaneous fat and then released into the bloodstream. You should be careful of the dosage level in these products. Some may have none to very little and others provide 20-30 mg in an average application. It’s always best to first check with a doctor.

Folic Acid supplements for pregnant women

Filed Under (Health Supplements) by Greg on 03-01-2009

One of the most important things you can do if you are thinking about becoming pregnant is start taking a prenatal vitamin with at least 400mg of folic acid. Folic acid is an essential nutrient that can help prevent birth defects in newborns. If you start taking a prenatal folic acid supplement before you even try to become pregnant, you will have the best chance of ensuring a happy and healthy journey once you become pregnant.

Prenatal vitamins are packed full of nutrients that will help support and nourish your growing child and your body during pregnancy. Most women assume that they need a prescription to acquire prenatal vitamins. There are actually however many high quality prenatal folic acid vitamin supplements you can purchase over the counter. If you are not certain what your best choice is, be sure to consult with your healthcare provider who can point you in the right direction.

If you aren’t engaging in regular exercise prior to pregnancy, you’ll find it is more difficult though not impossible to start exercising during pregnancy when you are already feeling bulky and tired. Therefore one of the best things you can do to prepare for pregnancy is start exercising regularly. You don’t have to join the Boston Marathon, but even walking around the block a few times per week will help tone and condition your body and help you prepare for the journey ahead.

Women who regularly engage in some form of exercise before and during pregnancy are more likely to experience quicker and less problematic labors. That is a good enough reason in and of itself to start exercising as soon as you can.

Vitamin B5 as an Acne Treatment

Filed Under (Health Supplements, Vitamins) by Greg on 31-12-2008

Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic acid) is commonly supplemented in large doses to reduce oil production and help rid your skin of acne. It works like Accutane, in the sense that it reduces oil production. Vitamin B5, however, works by helping your body to metabolize the fats in your body that later turn into sebum. Accutane actually shrinks the oil glands to block the oil from coming through to your face. Since vitamin B5 addresses the underlying problem, it is, in fact, the more efficient solution.

During your natural metabolism process, your body uses coenzyme-A to break down fats. When your body lacks enough coenzyme-A, not all of the bodies fats can be broken down, and your body has to get rid of them some how, so they are ejected through your oil glands on your skin in the form of sebum (oil). By creating more coenzyme-A, these extra fats can be broken down with the rest, and oil production will be greatly reduced.

Coenzyme-A is made up of three things: Cysteine, ATP and Pantothenic Acid. Your body takes care of cysteine and ATP by producing it by itself, so vitamin B5 is the only thing that you have to take in through food. By taking vitamin B5 supplements, more coenzyme-A is produced, fats are broken down better, and less oil ends up on your skin. Without too much oil on your face, when a pore gets clogged, the p. acnes bacteria will have nothing to feed upon and can’t thrive to cause acne in the first place.

Intensive treatments with vitamin B5 works to clear acne for more than 90% of the people who take it, it’s a very effective medication. Since it’s all natural and water soluble, it’s much safer than Accutane, which only works for 70%-80% of the people who take it. It’s also more efficient than Accutane, because it eliminates the problem, instead of covering it up by shrinking the glands and trapping the fats inside the body.
To address a vitamin B5 deficiency, you have to take large amounts of it, up to around 12 grams of pantothenic acid powder per day. Always divide the doses into 4 times per day, spreading them out as much as possible. The only known side effect of pantothenic acid is stomach complaints which can be avoided by drinking a big glass of water when taking the supplement. The only other thing to watch out for is that pantothenic acid can deplete your body of other B vitamins, so a B-50 complex should be taken with it.

Since vitamin B5 has to be taken in large doses to see results, that means you can forget trying to get enough by eating foods high in it, or through a multivitamin or B vitamin complex. You can even forget about taking pantothenic acid pills, since that means you would have to take 20+ pills every day. There’s only really one reasonable way to take the amount of vitamin B5 you will need to treat acne, which is pantothenic acid powder.

Pantothenic acid pills can’t be found in most stores, much less the powder form of it. Some health food stores might have it. You might be able to talk to someone at your local store and have them order it for you, though it’s usually marked up quite a bit. The easiest and cheapest way to get pantothenic acid powder is to just order it online. A Google search will uncover many websites, such as Amazon.com, which sell pantothenic acid powder at a great price.

Medicare Supplement Leads (pt1)

Filed Under (Health Supplements) by Greg on 25-12-2008

For many elderly people, it seems that Medicare is the end all and be all that will take care of all of their medical needs in their senior years.  So the idea of having to buy a supplement seems excessive when the program is already there to take care of their expenses after they reach the age of 65.  This outlook is flawed and if it is not corrected, an elderly person may not realize the limitations of Medicare until the need is upon him or her and then they are faced with huge medical costs that they did not expect.

It may be up to adult children of the elderly to help them to first grasp the need for Medicare supplement insurance and then to learn how to find good leads to supplement programs that can fill in the gaps in Medicare without becoming a financial burden themselves.  Like any government program, the rules for the different levels of Medicare coverage are complicated and hard to deal with.  So if you can take the time to study what is and is not covered by Medicare and then be patient to help your elderly relative to at least understand why supplemental help is important, that can go a long way toward avoiding a potential financial or medical crisis down the road when expensive medical care is needed and the funds to cover that care must be there.

There are four levels of Medicare each of which deals with a different aspect of medical coverage.  Medicare type A deals with paying for hospital expenses while you are staying overnight in a hospital.  Medicare type B helps pay your routine doctors fees and tests.  Medicate part C is optional coverage and part D have to do with prescription drugs.  For each of these variations on Medicare, there are deductibles and limits you can hit after which the extent of Medicare coverage you have will be exhausted.  These deductibles and limits change from time to time so it takes some determined attention to the program to make sure that your elderly loved one is covered at all times for any medical need they might have.

Medicare supplemental programs are important resources to help a senior citizen have the funds available so the deductibles that are part of Medicare do not eat up necessary funds.  They also are crucial should your hospital, doctor or drug needs for a particular medical emergency exceed the Medicare limits.  To get some good leads on Medicare supplement programs, talk to other seniors who have programs that have worked for them.  But don’t be shy to turn to the internet.

This is one area of insurance where the interent is the most efficient way to make the determination which program you will have your elderly mom or dad become a part of.  And once you have a reliable Medicare supplement program in place, it will give peace of mind to your elderly loved one and to you and your family that will help everybody sleep better at night knowing that if there is a medical problem, there are funds there to take care of it.

Testosterone Supplements (pt1)

Filed Under (Health Supplements) by Greg on 22-12-2008

If you follow the coverage of major sporting events, you know of the bad publicity that performance enhancing supplements have gotten because a few athletes have excelled while using steroids or other drugs that are dangerous and illegal to the sport.  The images of gold metal winners at the Olympics being stripped of their awards or record breaking baseball players being disgraced because performance enhancing drugs robbed them of their glory are just heartbreaking.

The problem with all that publicity is that the stigma of these scandals puts all muscle building supplements under a cloud of suspicion.  But any bodybuilder will tell you that there are many perfectly legal and healthy diet supplements like HGH and testosterone products that aid in muscle development but in a healthy way.  By working with the body’s natural processes for breaking down and rebuilding muscles, supplements rich in testosterone simply use how the body builds muscle naturally and accelerates that process.

If you are moving into a new program of advanced weight training, including diet supplements is not just one idea of many.  It is a necessary part of your athletic discipline.  Intense weight training is a rigorous process and the body needs all the protein and other natural supplements it can get to manage the transition that is going on in the muscular system.  Supplements that are healthy and beneficial to the athlete provide that support and when taken in proper dosage and in balance with good diet and proper rest, these supplements are an important part of any serious athlete’s success in his or her sport.

In order to assure you are using a healthy and legal supplement, work with your trainer, your gym and your doctor to narrow down the products that are the right choice for your level of activity.  These products will combine protein supplements with testosterone and human growth hormone (or HGH) to help your muscles move through the development process quickly and with less pain and discomfort than you might ordinarily endure.

You will have some choices in brands and formulas as well as in methods of administration of the supplements.  One of the most popular ways to take a testosterone supplement is by using a thin strip that melts under your tongue and is absorbed into your bloodstream.  By making it a priority to only use supplements that use testosterone and HGH in a legal and healthy way, you will avoid any chance you will step over into that unethical zone of using performance enhancing drugs that is a danger to your health and your career.

Collagen Supplements

Filed Under (Health Supplements) by Greg on 21-12-2008

There is a good side and a bad side to our endless quest for the fountain of youth.  The bad side is that in an effort to deny the effects of age, we will take treatments that give us the appearance of youth but not the real body of a young person.  There is nothing so sad as to see someone who is further along in adulthood using botox and hair pieces to look 25 and then to try to play tennis or dance the night away like a young person only to experience severe discomfort because that 40-50 year old body just can’t act like that any more.

The good side of our desire to retain youth comes when we adopt a healthy lifestyle of diet and exercise and stay physically active so that our bodies don’t go down hill so rapidly.  There is nothing so encouraging that to see someone in their middle age years who acts their age but continues to live a busy and healthy life because the joy of being active and capable of living life to its fullest is a reward all in itself.

Drugs that promise perpetual youth are often the evidence of the dark side of our youth obsession.  But there are many healthy diet supplements that can do us a lot of good by providing our bodies the proteins and other needed elements that keep us vital and able to stay on the go like we want to be.  Of the many supplements that we look to for that kind of help, collagen appeals to both the dark side and the positive side of a desire to look and live a youthful lifestyle.

Collagen is a protein that is an important part of our physical make up.  Its job is to provide connective tissue for our joints, tendons, muscles and even our skin and bones.  So basically, collagen is what holds us together.  It is collagen that gives young people their trim and smooth look.  But like other aspects of aging, when we grow older, natural collagen production in our bodies declines.  Hence, our skin sags as do our muscles.  The loss of collagen also affects our joints causing those “aches and pains” that are a common complaint when we get older.

Collagen supplements are a great way to return a lot of that youthful elasticity and tightness to all aspects of our physical make up.  In some ways, it does act like a youth pill in that way.  It can restore limberness in joints and muscles so when you exercise, you get better results.  It also can help with skin care programs restoring some of skins resistance to wrinkles and sagging.  So in general collagen is a beneficial supplement that helps us fight back against the ravages of aging.

Wholesale Supplements

Filed Under (Health Supplements) by Greg on 16-12-2008

Diet or health related supplements is big business, just try and get a highly placed adwords ad and you’ll see why.  And if you have found that you have a need for a certain kind of supplement, it is easy to notice that they are not cheap.  Even though we have reports that show that the mark up on these supplements is huge, that doesn’t mean it is always easy to find them wholesale or even at discounted prices.  But if you are skilled shopper that doesn’t mind doing your homework to find good prices, even something as limited in market size as health related diet supplements can be found at wholesale prices or less.

Unlike furniture or clothing, there is no “seconds” market for supplements.  If there was one, you probably not want to shop there.  This brings us to the first cardinal rule of finding wholesale supplement products and that is that buying lower quality is not acceptable.  Some of the resources for health related supplements may advertise on their web sites that they are “just as good as…” the name brand that is well known.  But don’t take that claim on face value.

It should be part of your discipline when you set about to find good supplements at wholesale products that you cannot compromise significantly from the formula of the product that leads the market.  So the first thing you must do is study the formula for how the original supplement was made.  The side panel of any product that is meant for human consumption will list the ingredients and many times the percentage levels that each ingredient makes up of the total product.  Make note of this formula from the name brand product so you have a starting place for comparison.

When you see that ingredients panel, the ingredient that is in the product the most is listed first and the order of the ingredients on the panel represents how dominant that element is in the formula.  Note that too because you will use it to study replacement products to make sure they follow the same rules and that they are not using unacceptable substitutes for key ingredients in the brand you are seeking to replace.  When you find a generic or discount brand that has the quality you require at the price you want, you have found your wholesale supplement and you are ready to buy.

The internet is a great way to shop for wholesale prices on all products even health related supplements.  Be mindful of the supplier that they guarantee their work and that they are reputable merchants so you do get your product and there is a way to get resolution if they send you an inferior product or the wrong thing.  But if you are diligent that you are doing business with an honest supplier who also has wholesale prices on good products, that is a supplier you want to build a relationship with that will last a long time.

Fiber Supplements (pt2)

Filed Under (Health Supplements) by Greg on 16-12-2008

Fiber is one of those “magic” substances that has gotten a lot of attention in the world of weight loss marketing in the last few years.  The promotion of a “high fiber” diet has become a byword for a diet that is healthy and, by association, one that is slender.  Fiber in your diet is also commonly associated with prevention of cancer due to the positive effects of fiber on the lower intestines and colon.  So one of the ways you can evaluate many products, particularly breads and cereals is by its fiber content.

It only makes sense then that there would be a rise in interest in diet supplements that dramatically increase the level of fiber in your system.  There is no question that a healthy level of fiber in the diet is good for your digestive system.  And if your digestive system is working well, that is one of many components of good health, which leads to a healthy weight as well.  It should go without saying that just increasing fiber in the diet will not automatically result in weight loss.  It is just one good step toward general good health.  You must still maintain an overall healthy approach to diet and exercise to see weight loss that can accompany all the good you are doing for your digestive system by increasing the fiber content of your daily diet intake.

The first thing to determine if you feel you want to use supplements to increase the fiber in your diet is to get a measurement of how much fiber your diet usually delivers to your body naturally each day.  This calls for maintaining some records of foods you normally eat that increase your fiber count.  The general level of fiber consumption that is considered healthy for most people is 25-30 grams of fiber a day.  If you are hitting that level, supplements are probably not necessary.  But if supplements can help you achieve your fiber goals, there are certainly abundant.

Fiber supplements come in just about any form you would need or to fit your lifestyle.  They come as a powder that can be mixed with juice with your breakfast in the morning.  Fiber supplement pills are good for when you are on the run.  There are even cookies or wafers that are essentially a supplement for your fiber content that can also serve as a snack to help keep your appetite under control.

The important thing to remember is that these supplements should not take the place of food.  You can always increase the fiber content of your diet by simply increasing the level of high fiber certain fruits and vegetables that will accomplish the same goals as the supplements but do so while giving you good food value too.  And real foods are cheaper than supplements so it is worth considering just improving your diet anytime you have an option rather than turn to a diet supplement.
